  1. This is a nice bike (2013 model) Review by johnny_nyc

Bike arrived in 2 business days.

I got the "pro build" for another $20 so set up was not much of a question.

No scratches from shipping, brakes were set up to stop on a dime, more or less, at crusing speeds.

Have ridden around 20 miles and am satisfied.

I did throw some tires I prefer on it and replaced the seat with one I had already broken in.

The handlebars measure 22" across so I don't know what other reviewers are referring to when they say the bars are short or maybe the width is new to the 2013 model. (Posted on 10/11/12)

  2. Good bike at this price point Review by westland

At this price point, this is an outstanding deal, and Road Bike Outlet has great customer service. As has been mentioned, some of the accessories are not the top quality. I've replaced the brake levers and the seat (~$35 total) but everything else was fine for me. The frame is very solid, and have no complaints about welds, either from a cosmetic or quality standpoint. The rims are fine; I'm not sure how durable the tubes and tires will be, but they are cheap to replace (and you should spend $6 to get a spare tube anyway). This does require assembly; being a fixie, you should learn to do the work yourself (it's simple and takes 30 minutes to assemble from the box). You will have to do this over time anyway. If you don't like assembly, then you should buy a bike from a shop that will do the work for you. (Posted on 9/3/12)

  3. Great quality and price! Review by Lorenzo

I really like this bike and it is probably the cheapest single speed/fixed gear bike out there for the excellent quality it has. It rides very smoothly and quick, along with having a good brake system. I would definitely recommend this to my friends and others.

Great customer service too by the way! They helped me out a lot in my decision process. (Posted on 8/31/12)

  4. Easy assemble Review by Marc

L O V E this bike easy assemble fast shipping and listen i'm 14 and people made fun of me because i didnt have a "PUREFIX" BUT hey i let them ride mine to figure out the difference and oh boy did they shut up after that!! After riding my Vilano they wished they had bought this one rather than the Purefix it would have saved them over $200 with the 200 that i saved i bought myself some riser handlebars a new seat and still had money left over GREAT BIKE !!!:D (Posted on 7/3/12)

  6. Amazing Bike Review by ulrich

  7. Easy to assemble but no directions Review by mikey

Shipping was fast. I had to email asking for a tracking # but the response was immediate and apologetic. It took me about an hour to unwrap and assemble.
The brakes are old tech but I knew that going in. However, they work just fine.
The handlebars are so short that the grips interfere with the brake lever mounting a little bit.
I haven't tried the fixie side of the wheel, but the freewheel side was fast and smooth.
The plan is to use this as often as possible for a 10 mile commute to work. I really think it is going to be a great bike. (Posted on 4/13/12)

  8. Amazing, and well worth the money! Review by Michael

This bike is well worth the money!

It rides really smooth and is a really clean bike!

Everything came in, in good condition.

Just a few adjustments, and a few new parts, this is a sturdy, awesome bike! (Posted on 3/11/12)

  9. Pleased all around. Review by MMStingray

I moved to the city recently, and use a Jamis Commuter to get to work. Nice bike, but too loaded down with commuter-type stuff and heavy to be ridden aggressively. I wanted a second bike for just tooling around the city and exploring, and as simple as possible---which led me to buy the Vilano SS.

I ordered it on a Friday night and received it Thursday morning (I'm in MA). I have to say that the packaging was surprisingly clever and extensive. Sure, there was the odd scratch here and there, but I was expecting a lot worse. I was impressed to say the least.

I ordered mine in green, which is actually more yellow-green than lime than the picture suggests, and that's fine by me. The paint quality was about what I expected, with aa couple sags on the head tube. I avoided the colored accessories. So yes, although I ordered mine with drop bars, it did indeed come with the other 15" straight-ish bars as extra. I actually put the straight ones on first, and it probably would have sufficed, but I like the aesthetic of the drop bars more. They may prove to be more impractical because the top of
them isn't very wide, and once you add the brake levers, you have even less room. It's fine for now until I figure out what's best, and they were easy to wrap with the included rubber tape.

Rather than jump on and go as I was inclined to do, I decided to take my time and go over everything with a fine-tooth comb. Absolutely everything MUST be checked for tightness. The rear wheel was way too tight and was making the bearings in the crank and cog grind. Brakes needed adjusting and tightening, as well as the stem, etc.

I'm riding in freewheel mode at present until I'm comfortable with it (the frame is much more compact than I'm used to), and then will try the fixed option. The cage pedals that came with it are just fine for most applications, but I bought an aftermarket set of platform pedals with clips on one side. I have to echo the sentiments of other reviewers who mentioned how light the bike is. I was pleasantly surprised by that as well.

One thing that didn't occur to me is how tall the gearing would be. I live in a hilly area and found my usual hills to be quite...challenging. But good! I was curious about the other reviewers' comments about the brakes and didn't really understand what they meant. Brakes either stop you or they don't, right? Well I get it now. The sidepull brakes actually appear to be pretty high quality. It's just that when you clamp down on them, you don't slow down as quickly as you're anticipating. I guess it could either be the compound of the pads themselves, or the fact that there are tiny grooves in the rim's braking surface area.

So, in short, out of the box the bike is great for me. I know everyone's first inclination is always upgrade upgrade UPGRADE! right off the bat. That's natural and half the fun. The bike is certainly a great foundation for it, and
other than the pedals and maybe the pads, I'll hold off for awhile. I am very pleased with this bike and Road Bike Outlet and would recommend both without hesitation. (Posted on 1/25/12)
